Over 100 die after YSRs death, son appeals for calm [05/09/2009]
Hyderabad, Sep 4 (IANS) As many as 122 people across Andhra Pradesh reportedly died of shock or committed suicide after the death of their chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, prompting his MP son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy to appeal to the people to be stoic and brave. I appeal to all of you to be stoic and brave in this hour of tragedy. He (YSR) wanted to see a smile on the faces of all and if you resort to such things (suicide) this will hurt him, said Jaganmohan, trying hard to control his tears. He used to smile even in difficult times and I am sure he is still smiling. I request you to follow his principle and not to commit suicide as this will not give him peace, said Jaganmohan, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kadapa in the April-May elections and is being seen by many as the next chief minister. The appeal before the camera was telecast on all Telugu television channels. Television channels estimated that 122 people died of shock on hearing the news of their leaders death in a horrific air crash Thursday, or committed suicide unable to bear the loss. Most of those who died of shock were keenly following TV news channels ever since his chopper went missing early Wednesday and then received the news of his death on Thursday. NTV, a Telugu channel, reported that 122 people have died since Thursday morning when YSRs body was found. It said 99 people died of shock while 23 committed suicide. However, there was no independent confirmation of this. The police here said they did not have any figures to confirm this report.
Discovery of HIVs weak spot boosts vaccine quest [05/09/2009]
The discovery of antibodies that bind to a hitherto unknown "weak spot" on HIV has revived hopes that a potent vaccine is within reach. Now that the weak spot – common to many strains – has been discovered, researchers can aim for vaccines that trick people into making their own antibodies to target it. "Its the discovery of the target thats the key thing," says Wayne Koff, senior vice president of research and development at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative in New York, and a key member of the team reporting the breakthrough. Vaccine developers have been beset by one failure after another. One explanation for the failures is that HIV rapidly mutates to escape detection by the immune system. As a result, many of the mutated strains are no longer recognised by antibodies. But lab tests show the new antibodies bind to many more strains and variants of HIV than usual, potentially giving patients protection against any strains that infect them, or any new mutants that evolve in their own bodies.
Fuel leak behind Riyadh-bound A-I flight fire; passengers safe [05/09/2009]
Mumbai: Aviation experts on Friday said that a fuel leak from the wings of an Air India flight caused one of the engines to catch fire. Ground staff and emergency personnel of the fire brigade and disaster management teams surround the stranded Boeing 747 aircraft of the state-run national carrier Air India as it stands with its emergency slides deployed on the tramac of the Chattrapati Shivaji International airport in Mumbai on Friday. The engine of an Air India plane caught fire as the jet prepared to take off from Mumbai but all 213 passengers were safely evacuated, a company spokesman said. The passengers, who were heading to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, would travel on an alternate flight, he said, adding that details of the accident were being sought. Ruling out the possibility of a technical snag leading to the grounding of the aircraft at Mumbai Airport on Friday morning, the experts said the fuel leaked onto the heated engines of the aircraft and that had caused the fire. Had it not been detected, they said it could have led to a major catastrophe in the air.
